The Brit Awards eliminate the gender categories, also thanks to the appeal of Sam Smith

From the 2022 edition, the neutral Artist of the Year and International Artist of the Year debut

Inclusion also passes through the musical culture and the Brit Awards they are the latest awards ceremony to take that one step further, saying goodbye to gender categories!

From the 2022 edition, the Best Solo and Best International Act trophies that were previously awarded separately to males and females are replaced with neutrals: Artist of the Year And International Artist of the Year.

It is also thanks to Sam Smith if the British Phonographic Industry who runs the Brits made that decision. In fact, last year Sam had been excluded from the solo categories divided by gender and had declared: “I look forward to a time where award ceremonies can reflect the society we live in. We celebrate everyone, regardless of gender, race, age, sexuality and social class“.

A spokesperson for the Brit Awards replied: “We agree with what he said today, the Brits are committed to evolving the show and the gender categories will be reviewed“.

So it was and the news was announced through the official Twitter account: “The Brits are committed to making the show more inclusive. We celebrate artists only for their music and their work, rather than how they choose to identify and how others view them“.

In the next edition Four new categories are also making their debut: Alternative / Rock act, Pop / R & B act, Hip Hop / Grime / Rap act and Dance act.

The Brit Awards are held on February 8, 2022 at the O2 Arena in London conducted by comedian Mo Gilligan.
