MADRID, AUG 13 – The Spanish authorities have rescued 165 people who arrived on makeshift boats near the Canary Islands between yesterday afternoon and tonight: the news agency Efe reports, based on preliminary data provided by those responsible for the operations maritime rescue. Among the people rescued there are also dozens of women and more than 10 minors (some are small children), according to the first calculations. Some needed medical care in the hospital. According to the NGO Caminando Fronteras, which specializes in migratory interventions on the coasts of Africa from which boats leave for the Canaries, more than 2,100 people have died or disappeared on this route since the beginning of the year.
