End-to-end encryption in 2023 on Messenger and Instagram

Facebook Messenger and Instagram will only introduce end-to-end encryption for text chats in 2023.

In a recent report written by Antigone Davis, head of global security at Meta, the parent company that oversees Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp among others, Facebook will adopt end-to-end encrypted chats on both Messenger and Instagram in 2023.

Davis notes that end-to-end encrypted chats are already available on WhatsApp, which certainly makes sense considering it’s one of the most popular messaging platforms on the planet. However, we must not forget that Messenger is too and in some ways also Instagram. This particular feature has been in the works for some time, yet has not yet been made available to the public.

As for the release date for that feature, Davis says it will take some time to implement a feature that actually protects users:

We are taking our time to get it right and do not plan to complete the global implementation of end-to-end encryption on all of our messaging services until 2023. As a company that connects billions of people around the world and created industry-leading technology, we are determined to protect people’s private communications and keep people safe online.

Facebook’s initial goal was to introduce end-to-end encryption for both Messenger and Instagram by the end of 2022. However, some people have raised concerns that fully encrypted messaging could lead to some problems with agencies. that protect people, especially children. As a result, Facebook said it would tweak the process and find a way to strike a balance between privacy and security.
