Colombia: explosion in illegal coal mine, 12 dead


BOGOTA, AUGUST 25 – At least 12 people died and one was injured in an explosion in an illegal coal mine in Colombia, the National Mining Agency reported. The explosion was caused by a mixture of methane gas and coal dust, the agency said, according to which about 60% of the victims of mining accidents this year took place in illegal mines. Colombia, which is the world’s fifth-largest coal producer, recorded 171 deaths from mining accidents last year compared with 82 the previous year. (HANDLE).
