Canary eruption: over 300 new evacuees

MADRID, 24 SEPT – Between 300 and 400 new evacuated people on the island of La Palma (Canary Islands) after the eruptive activity of the Cumbre Vieja volcano intensified today. The news agency Efe reports. The managers of the emergency plan for the eruption explained that greater “explosiveness” of the volcano entailed serious risks for the populations of nearby areas. The Canary Institute of Volcanology and the Spanish Institute of Geology and Mining said that today two new eruptive vents opened, which ejected “rivers of lava” extending towards the coast for about a kilometer before slowing down and continuing to advance at a speed of approximately 60-80 meters per hour. Health authorities continue to insist on the need to protect themselves in particular from the ash and gases emitted by the volcano, which can cause respiratory, eye and skin problems: it is recommended to stay indoors with doors and windows closed in the event of “rain of ash”.
